THE WARTS
What are the warts
Warts are generally small cutaneous excrescences characterized by considerable thickening of the stratum corneum and yellow-grayish hues.
They are caused by a viral infection due to some HPV strains, the human papilloma virus; they occur mainly on the hands, fingers, face, soles of the feet, nail contour and genitals.
The most common type of warts is that of common warts (about 70% of the total), followed by plantar and plane warts.
Common warts
they represent the most common form of wart.
They are characterized by an irregular surface, variable size and round shape and are mainly present on the backs of the hands and fingers and in the nail contour. More rarely they occur on the palms of the hands, elbows and knees. They can cause pain if they are under pressure.
Plantar warts
they appear only on the sole of the foot and normally interrupt the tracing of lines and reliefs present on the skin that make up the footprint. For this reason and due to the fact that they can present inside dark spots, it is not possible to confuse them with plantar callosities. Warts of this kind tend to be softer, flat, covered with calluses and painful due to the pressure exerted during walking.
Causes
The underlying cause of warts are some HPV strains. The risk factors are those that facilitate the rooting of these virus strains: first of all, the contagion by direct contact with the warts of others or with their own warts (process known as “autoinoculation”, through which warts they are transmitted from one part of the body to the other).
Other risk factors are:
- the presence of skin lesions that facilitate the entry of viruses (a healthy, well-hydrated and wound-free skin is more resistant to viral attack);
- the weakening of the immune defenses;
- the promiscuous use of towels, bathrobes and nail care items.
Symptoms
Generally these infections appear as small outgrowths characterized by an irregular and rough surface to the touch, variable size and round shape. They mainly appear on the backs of the hands and fingers and in the nail contour. They can cause pain if they are under pressure.
Prevention
Warts have a high risk of recurrence. To avoid the onset of warts is good: avoid direct contact with the warts of others or with their own; take special care of the state of skin hygiene; avoid sharing “risky” objects such as towels, bathrobes and nail care items; To prevent plantar warts, use slippers or personal flip-flops in the pool / shower / gym path.
